Tarun Ram Phukan Biography 
Tarun Ram Phukan was a social worker and political leader from Assam who was fondly called ‘Desabhakta’. He was a freedom fighter too, and a leader of Indian national congress in politics. One of the prominent leaders from the state of Assam during British rule, he lived during the period, 22 January 1877 – 28 July 1939. Following his participation in Non-Cooperation Movement, he was arrested and jailed for one year in 1921. He served as the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1928 and Assam Chhatra Sammelan in 1928. He was also a popular figure in the civic life of Assam.
Tarun Ram Phukan was born on 22 January 1877 in Assam. His education was done at Cotton Collegiate School, Guwahati and Presidency College, Calcutta. Later, he moved to the Bar from Inner Temple in London. After completing his law studies he moved back to India, where he worked as a lecturer in law at Earle Law College in Guwahati. He got into active politics and freedom struggle movement since early 1900s, and was associated with it till his death in 1939. He was a member of Assam Association, a political organization till 1920.
When Assam Branch of the Indian National Congress was formed in 1921, he was elected its first President. He fully participated in Non-Cooperation Movement in Assam and got arrested also. As a social worker he strived for the uplift of the lower sectors of the society. When Assam Provincial Congress Committee was formed with its headquarters at Guwahati in 1921, he became one of its elected leaders and its president. Kuladhar Chaliha, Gopinath Bordoloi, Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Krishna Nath Sarmah and Kanak Chandra Sarmah were the prominent members of AICC then.
