Tarun Bose Biography

Tarun Bose was a noted actor of Bollywood during 1950’s, 1960’s and early 1970’s. He is known for his character roles, particularly with Black and White Bollywood movies. He died on March 8, 1972 at a comparatively young age of 43.  He joined the film industry in July 1957 and passed away in 1972. Thus he had a short career span of 14 years in Hindi cinema. Gumnaam, Madhumati, Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke, Bandini, Anupama, Devar, Mujhe Jeene Do, Sujata, Satyakam, Anokhi raat, Aankhon Aankhon Mein, Annadatha, Choti bahu, Kohra, Love in Tokyo, Oonche log, Chand Aur Suraj and Aan Milo Sajna are his most memorable roles.


Bose was born in Kolkata on September 28, 1928. He was brought up in Nagpur where he studied at St. Francis High School. At a younger age he started working in theatre as an actor. He auditioned for the newly opened All India Radio, Nagpur at the age of 15 and got selected. Later he performed in many radio plays. After completing his studies, he took a stable job and joined Post and Telegraph Department. Yet his dream was to become an actor and he worked, so that he could pursue acting on side, without family pressure. He was fluent in speaking Hindi and Urdu without traces of Bengali accent. But he initially faced problems while doing Bengali plays as he was not fluent. Later he learnt to speak Bengali too. However his desire to do a Bengali film remained unfulfilled.


Late Bimal Roy was his mentor. Bose made his film debut in 1957 in the Asit Sen film, Apradhi Kaun? (1957). The movie starred Mala Sinha and Abhi Bhattacharya in leading roles.  Later he became a part of Bollywood portraying several intense roles. He worked in about 40 films in a career span of 14 years and gained a reputation for playing middle class professional figures.
