Tariq Anwar Biography

Tariq Anwar is a prominent politician and parliamentarian from Bihar, who had a long term association with Indian National Congress till late 1990s. He is the general secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party of India (NCP). He along with Sharad Pawar and P. A. Sangma broke from Indian National Congress in 1999, in protest of a person of foreign origin being appointed as president of Congress party. Thus the trio formed Nationalist Congress Party of India. Anwar has served as a member of parliament multiple times, representing Katihar (Bihar) Parliamentary constituency. He has also represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha before. Though he is associated with NCP, his party supported UPA government during 2004-2014. As per latest updates, Tariq Anwar resigns from NCP after Sharad Pawar’s ‘Support’ for PM Modi in Rafale Deal.

Tariq Anwar was born on 16 January 1951 in Patna, Bihar. He is married to Hena Anwar and the couple has 1 Son & 4 Daughters. The family is now settled at Katihar, the constituency which he represented at Lok Sabha multiple times. Now also he serves as MP of Katihar representing Nationalist Congress Party of India. Tariq entered politics as a student leader associated with Indian National Congress.

He contested Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1977 representing Indian National Congress from Katihar. Though he lost 1977 elections, he got elected from the same constituency on a Congress ticket for the next general elections conducted in 1980. Indian national congress came into power under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. In the late 1980s, he was associated with state politics, and has served as a cabinet minister in Satyendra Narain Sinha. He was given deputy CM post and also portfolio, Finance.
