T. V. Venkatachala Sastry Biography

Togere Venkatasubbasastry Venkatachala Sastry, shortly called T. V. Venkatachala Sastry is an accomplished writer and scholar belonging to Kannada literature. A pioneer in the field of literature and grammar, he is a grammatician, critic, editor and lexicographer. He served as a Kannada professor at the University of Mysore and retired as Director of "Kannada Adhyayana Samsthe" in 1994. An authority on Kannada language grammar, he wrote extensively on the history of Kannada literature. His published books include research works and criticism, poetry, plays, books on grammar and biographies, apart from other forms of literature. He also edited several books.

 

He was born in Kanakapura of Bangalore in British India in the year 1933. He hailed from Harohalli village. He belonged to Mulukanadu community, and later he authored a book, Mulukanadu Brahmanaru, a detailed study of this community. After school education from his native place, his higher studies were completed at Mysore. He took Master’s in Kannada literature in the year 1955 and began his career as a lecturer at Kanakapura rural college the same year. Since then he has worked as a lecturer and later professor at various colleges in Karnataka. He published Mahakavyalakshana in 1969, one of his major works.

 

Apart from writing non-fiction research works, he also translated numerous books to Kannada. Sreevatsa Nighantu (1971), Mulukanadu Brahmanaru (2000), Udaracharitaru Udattaprasangagalu (2002) and Kannada Chandomimase (2003) are among his major works. As a writer and scholar, his contribution to Kannada literature is outstanding. He was awarded with an honorary Kannada Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1997. Kannada State Award (1988), Bhashasamman (2002) and Aryabhata Award (2006) are other major honours received by him. He is married to Venkatalakshmi.
