T. V. Varadarajan Biography

T. V. Varadarajan is a noted television actor and news anchor associated with Tamil entertainment industry. He had been a news reader for Doordarshan for over 28 years, and is a household name to Tamil television audience. Varadarajan was working with Bank of India at their Zonal Office in Chennai, prior to his entry to television world. He also appears in TV serial dramas and currently plays the character of Raghavan in the Sun TV serial Thamarai. He has also played supporting roles in Tamil movies, Antha Sila Naatkal (1983), Pattukottai Periyappa (1994) and Arunachalam (1997).

 

T. V. Varadarajan worked with banking sector before he forayed to television arena. Banker, television personality and stage actor – he has donned different hats with elan and also tasted a remarkable degree of success in all these fields, before he finally decided to settle with theatre. In 2016 he came to spotlight for his play, ‘Sri Thyagarajar.’

 

He hailed from Damal, near Kancheepuram. Varadharajen was named after the presiding deity of Sri Varadaraja Swamy temple, Kancheepuram. His siblings are also named after the temple’s other deities — Pranatharthiharan (Damal Ramakrishnan) and Perundevi. They are religious orators. His father D.V. Srinivasa Iyengar was a Sanskrit scholar and taught at The Hindu High School, Triplicane. He used to read a sargam from Valmiki Ramayanam in the Headmaster’s room every day at lunch, attended by teachers and students. His father was interested in plays, and young Varadarajan too appeared in stage plays. It was his first stint in acting.

 

After joining Doordarshan as a news anchor, he got chances to act in plays by Y. Gee. Mahendra and later started a theater group in the 1990s. Elavasa Enaippu is his most popular stage play followed by 'Ithu Namma Naadu'. He was given a break to television by K. Balachander, and appeared in his plays - Premi, Kai Alavu Manasu and Kadhal Pagadai.
