T. V. Chandran Biography

T. V. Chandran is a critically well acclaimed film maker of Malayalam. He is also a screenwriter and actor. He started his film career as an assistant director to P. A. Backer and John Abraham and later directed movies in their style – parallel cinema. His debut movie, Krishnan kutty produced in 1981 is still to be released. He played lead role in Backer's highly acclaimed political drama Kabani Nadi Chuvannappol (1975), the movie regarded as a classic. He is also known for his trilogy on 2002 Gujarat riots -Kathavasheshan (2004), Vilapangalkappuram (2008), and Bhoomiyude Avakashikal (2012). Other noted works are Paadam onnu: Oru vilapam (for which Meera Jasmine won national award), Alicinte Anveshanam (1989), Ormakal Undayirikkanam, Susanna, Ponthanmaada (Mammootty won National award), Aadum koothu (Dhanush won National award for best actor), Mangamma and Danny.

 

T. V. Chandran is widely regarded as one among the top directors of contemporary and present day cinema who revolutionized parallel cinema with his realistic and creative ideas. He is one of the finest directors of present Indian cinema. He has already won 6 National awards and 10 state awards. He has also won numerous international awards. Alicinte Anveshanam (1989) was the movie that won international credits for the first time when it was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival. His Tamil movie, Hemavin Kadhalargal as a director too brought him wide acclaim. Hemavin Kadhalargal was his first released movie and it was released in the year 1985.

 

T. V. Chandran was born in Thalassery of Kannur. He has had no formal training in film-making. He started his career as an actor in Kabani Nadi Chuvannappol (1975). The leftist political cinema released during emergency period was regarded as a bold attempt to get released in that political situation. Later he worked as an assistant to the same director and debut with Krishnan kutty in 1981. He has won 6 National awards. He won National Film Award for Best Director for Ponthamada and National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare for Paadam onnu: Oru vilapam. He has also won several awards in regional film category.
