T. S. Balakrishna Sastrigal Biography

T. S. Balakrishna Sastrigal was a Harikatha exponent and Hindu scholar. His full name is Thiruvidaimarudur Sambamurti Ganapaadigal Balakrishna Sastrigal. He lived during the period,1919–2003. For his contributions towards the field of art, he received Sangeetha Kalasikhamani, 1988 by The Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai. Both his sons are associated with art and cinema field. While his son T. S. B. K. Moulee is a film director, his younger son S. B. Khanthan is a theatre personality with brief stint in films.

 

T. S. Balakrishna Sastrigal was born in 1919 in the town of Thiruvidaimarudur.  His father Sambamurti Ganapaadigal was a Vedic scholar who gave discourses. Sastrigal’s school and college education were completed in Chennai. He was proficient in English literature, and has also acted in English Shakespeare plays during his college days. After studies he joined Imperial bank of India to start his career as a banker. Imperial bank of India is now known as State Bank of India. He retired as Senior Executive of State Bank of India.

 

He started learning Harikatha at the age of 8, and the lessons were taught by his father, who was very religious. The training included Vedas, Puranas, Sastras, Carnatic Music, and also different languages. He began performing at the age of 16, and carried this profession aside his banking career. In a career spanning over almost 7 decades, he established himself as a leading artist of this art form. He also delivered Musical Discourses to the society.

 

He was an exponent of Thyagaja Charitham, and also performed Valimiki and Kamba Ramayanam, Mahabharatham, Srimad Bhagawatham, Devi Bhagawatham, Skaandham, Naaraayaaneeyam, Naayanmargal charitham etc. He was a legend in the comprehension of Thyagaraja Krithis. He passed away on 11th June 2003 at Apollo Hospital, Chennai and was survived by his wife B Nagalakshmi and two sons. He was 84.
