T. P. Radhamani Biography

T.P.Radhamani was an iconic radio announcer associated with All India Radio, Thiruvananthapuram during its glorious years. She gained a unique position in the hearts of Malayalis through her unique voice she gave through radio for many years. Apart from radio announcer, she was also associated with radio plays which were once regular in Akashvani, and her magical voice infinite fans also. She passed away on 17th May, 2018 aged 84. She was married to Gangadharan Nair, a poet, an actor and radio announcer associated with Akashvani. Author of iconic Malayalam poem, Pala Pala Naalukal Njaanoru Puzhuvaay he died earlier.

 

Radhamani was born into a family of artists, associated with dubbing & acting. She joined Akashvani All India Radio in the year 1950. She retired in the year 1993. She has worked as a dubbing artist for many Malayalam movies in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of them include - Devi Kanyakumari, Enipadikal, Laila Majnu, Sree Guruvayurappan, Priyamulla Sofia, Shalini Ente Koottukaari, Kallan Pavithran, Kelkkatha Shabdam, Novemberinte Nashtam, Pokkuveyil etc. She was seen in brief roles in Mohanlal movies - Innathe Chinthavishayam & Rasathanthram.

 

Radio play Kannaki gave her a celebrity status in Radio profession. She gained success in this field at a time when dubbing was no so familiar to Malayali artists. She was married to Gangadharan Nair who became familiar to Malayalis through Akashvani shows - Ammavan and Balalokam. He has played the central character in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s movie, Mukhaamukham. He is also the author of very famous Malayalam poem, Pala Pala Naalukal Njaanoru Puzhuvaay, included in school syllabus since late 1980s.

 

The couple has 4 children. Her two sons – Nandakumar & R. Chandra Mohan and daughter-in-law Ambili are established artists in dubbing field. One son, Kannan has worked as a TV presenter and news reader with Doordarshan in the 1990s and later. One daughter R. Srikala is a retired chief manager of SBT. She took her last breath on 17th May, 2018 in her residence Karthika at Poojapura Chenkalloor Kailas Nagar in the evening around 7.30 pm. She was 84.
