T. P. Madhavan Biography

T. P. Madhavan is a veteran character artist associated with Malayalam cinema. He started his film career as a villain and later did a wide range of significant roles – from comic roles to serious ones. He has portrayed over 500 character roles on Malayalam screen in a career spanning to about 40 years since 1975. Apart from film roles, he has also acted in a few television serials. When Malayalam film association AMMA was started, he was chosen as its secretary. He served as the secretary of AMMA during 1994 -1997 and joint Secretary during 2000-2006. He also played a significant role in organizing film festivals, attended by legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Hassan.

 

Madhavan reached films at the age of 40. He was born as the eldest son to N.P. Pilla and Saraswathi at Thiruvananthapuram. His father was the dean at Kerala University. Madavan pursued graduation in sociology and later got selected to Indian army. But following a scooter accident, his hand got fractured.  He had to withdraw from service and worked as a journalist in Mumbai during 1960s. He quit the job as it paid him less. He started an Ad agency in Bangalore before his entry to Malayalam cinema in the year 1975 with the movie – Raagam. He got acquainted with a few film personalities like Madhu, Adoor Bhasi and Bahadoor which paved his way to cinema.

 

He got married to Sudha and had two children. But the couple separated following his film career. The reason stated by his wife was – his acting career. She was not willing to approve Madhavan with female co-stars onscreen. He is living in his flat alone for the past few years, stating that marriage life is not suited for actors. In December 2015, he fell critically ill during a pilgrim to Haridwar and later recovered.

 

He completed post-graduation only to please his father. He completed sociology from Agra University. Cinema was his ultimate aim. He did a lot of odd jobs before entering the magical world of cinema. Ultimately he entered cinema at the age of 40. Since then he entertained audience with his screen presence and caliber. He played numerous glorifying roles onscreen in the 1980s and 1990s. Pigman, Ayalum Njanum Thammil, Cinema Company, Ordinary, Spirit, Indian Rupee etc are some of his latest roles.
