T. Muthuraj Biography

T. Muthuraj is a film production designer and art director best known for the works - Pazhassi Raja, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam and Angadi Theru. He is associated with south Indian cinema and one of the leading names of this field as well. He worked under Sabu Cyril for many years before entering independent works. 1997 Malayalam movie Guru, which was India’s official entry for the academy awards, was his real breakthrough. He also received Kerala State Film Award for Best Art Director for the same movie. He won it for the second time for 2009 movie Pazzassi Raja. Till now he has done about 50 films and 185 commercials. Nanban – Tamil remake of 3 Idiots is one of his latest works.

 

MuthuRaj was born in Coimbatore on July 29, 1969. After graduation from Chennai, he started doing a few freelance assignments. Then he joined Sabu Cyril as an assistant art director. Muthuraj is the first assistant of his renowned art director. He began his career as an independent art director with Malayalam movies and Guru fetched him a good name and awards as well. Later he worked in Albhuthadeepu and Devadoothan, the movies belonging to similar fantasy genres. Hariharan’s Pazhassi Raja earned him good name and fame as well as many awards.

 

His first film in Tamil was Marumalarchi, set in a village. After Pazhassi Raja’s success, he got many offers from Tamil film industry as well. Angadi Theru and the fantasy film Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam are his appreciated works in Tamil. He loves to do fantasy films most, as it gives more room for art director to exhibit his creativity and artistic talents.
