T. G. Ravi Biography

T. G. Ravi is a well-established villain of Malayalam cinema, also known for portraying character roles. He has been one of the established ‘Bad men’ of Malayalam since late 1970’s and throughout 1980’s. Later he moved to character roles. In 2013, he was seen portraying the negative role in comedy-thriller Romans. Punyalan Agarbattis (2013) is his latest release, in which he played the pivot role of a social leader who gives support and advices to Joy Thakkolkaran, character played by Jayasurya. 22 Female Kottayam (2012) is one among the powerful roles in the recent times. Pranchiyettan & the Saint and Celluloid are other noted works in the recent times. He is also known as an entrepreneur and businessman and is the Managing Director of Suntec Tyres Limited. He has also served as the president of The Cochin Devaswom Board, which controls temples of Malabar and mid-Kerala.

 

He was born in Moorkkanikkara village of Thrissur in 1944. Though he completed Mechanical Engineering in 1969 and was a sportsperson during his college days, he chose to become an actor. He was an artist at The All India Radio and an industrialist of Thrissur who is credited to transforming Thrissur to a region for rubber based industries. Once he happened to meet the noted writer Thikkodiyan while working in All India Radio. It paved his way to join professional acting and Malayalam film industry. Thikkodiyan introduced Ravi to Aravindan, who gave him a small role in Utharayanam.

 

He was associated with theater plays of his village and started his professional career as a theater artist. He was also active with radio plays. Utharayanam started his film debut in a small role. When film roles dried up, he produced one movie – Padasaram, in which he played the main role. The movie was a disaster at box office. He produced two more movies - Chora Chuvanna Chora and Chakara. In Chakara, he played villain’s role opposite Jayan, which was hugely appreciated and thus he started his career as a villain onscreen. Movies of 1980’s, Ee Nadu, Iniyenkilum, Pathamudayam, 1921, NH 47, and Pavam Krooran are worth mentioning.

 

After a break in the early 1980’s, he returned back to cinema in 2006. His son, Sreejith ravi is a well-established actor of Malayalam cinema of present times.  Sreejith has dubbed for his father for the movies - Ashwaroodan and Pranchiyettan & the Saint.
