T. C. Yohannan Biography

T. C. Yohannan is an Indian athlete, associated with long jump event. He was a star player for India in the 1970s, and represented his country at many international events. This veteran player held the national record in long jump for nearly 3 decades. He is also an Olympian who represented India at 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Yohannan cleared a distance of 8.07 metres at the Teheran Asian Games 1974 for a new Asian record, which is regarded as his most memorable performance. He has been honoured with Arjuna Award in 1974. International cricketer Tinu Yohannan is his son. He has retired from international career now.

 

His expansion of initials is Thadathuvila Chandapillai Yohannan. He hails from Kollam district of Kerala. Maranadu is his native village. He was born on 19 May 1947. Since school days, he was fully active in sports events. After studies he joined Bhilai Steel Plant and worked in public sector. He has also represented Bhilai for many tournaments. He also played in the national level for the first time in 1969 as an employee of Bhilai. He finished fourth in the long Jump and fifth in the triple jump. In the national games, he improved his position in athletic events.

 

Since early 1970s, following his good performances in national level games, he got opportunity to represent India at many international events. He won Gold Medals in both the long and triple jump in an international event held at Singapore. He improved national record in 1972 and 1973. But in Tehran Asian Games of 1974, he cleared a distance of 8.07 metres which was a new Asian record. After his appearance in Montreal Olympics in 1976, he retired from international career.
