Syed Ahmed (politician) Biography

Syed Ahmed was an Indian Politician belonging to Congress Party, and an author. He sworn in as the 16th Governor of Manipur on 16 May 2015, but passed away four months later in 27 September, same year. Prior to his appointment as the governor of Manipur, he has served as 8th Governor of Jharkhand during 4 September 2011 – 15 May 2015, preceded by M. O. H. Farook. He died of cancer on 27 September 2015 at Lilavati hospital, Mumbai. As a writer, Pagdandi se Shahar Tak is his autobiography work, and Kafas se Chaman, Maktal se Manzil and Jange-Azaadi Me Urdu Shayari being other published books.

 

Ahmed was born on 6 March 1945 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He held two master's degrees in both Hindi and English and a doctorate in Urdu. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1977, and has been active in the party throughout his life. Ahmed has been quite successful in state politics, and has been elected to Maharashtra state assembly 5 times since then. He represented Nagpada constituency in Mumbai for all his 5 terms as MLA, and has served as a minister of Maharashtra, where he held portfolios like housing.

 

After his active career in state politics, he was appointed as 8th Governor of Jharkhand during 4 September 2011. He was shifted to the north-eastern State from Jharkhand when the United Progressive Alliance government was in power at the centre. Later in 2015 he was appointed as Governor of Manipur in 2015, four months prior to his death. He passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai. He was suffering from cancer. He was survived by his wife and son.
