Syed Abdul Rahim Biography

Syed Abdul Rahim was an Indian football player and one of the foremost football coaches for team India. He served as Indian football coach and manager of the Indian national team from 1950 until his death in 1963. As a coach, his outstanding tournament is 1956 Melbourne Olympic Football tournament, when India made it to semifinals. It was for the first time an Asian team achieved this feat. He is regarded as the architect of modern Indian football. Jakarta Asian games in 1962 was yet another remarkable tournament, when India earned gold beating South Korea in the finals. It was his last tournament win as a football coach. The legendary coach was a good teacher, and known to be a good motivator to his students.

 

Abdul Rahim was born in Hyderabad on 17 August 1909. His career started as a coach and secretary of Hyderabad City Police in 1943. He served this position for next 20 years. He served as the head coach & secretary of Hyderabad City Police during 1943-50, followed by secretary of Hyderabad City Police during 1950–1963. He was appointed as the coach of Indian football team in 1950, a position he held till his death. Under his leadership the Indian football team won the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962, and also managed to reach 1956 Melbourne Olympic Football tournament.

 

Abdul Rahim died from cancer on 11 June 1963. He was only 53 years old then. A biopic is to be made in Bollywood based on the professional career of Syed Abdul Rahim. The very talented Ajay Devgan is to portray his role in Boney Kapoor's sports drama. The movie is to be made to silver screen after 56 years after that glorious win in Asian Games 1962, just one year before his death.
