Swatilekha Sengupta Biography

Swatilekha Sengupta is an accomplished and veteran stage actress associated with Nandikar, one of the oldest and well established theater troupes from Bengal. She played lead role in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film- Ghare Baire (1985), an adaption of Tagore’s novel with the same name. For her outstanding contributions to Bengali theatre she has been honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She is married to Rudraprasad Sengupta, the personality who steered Bengali theatre group Nandikar through the decades. Noted film and theater artist Sohini Sengupta is their daughter. Rudraprasad Sengupta, Swatilekha Sengupta and Sohini Sengupta are associated with Nandikar. Rudraprasad Sengupta is associated with the troupe since early 1960s, and now the leading member of the troupe.

 

She was born in 1950. Swatilekha Chatterjee is her maiden name. She started her journey as a theater artist with the early 1970s in Allahabad. She was a part of A.C. Banerjee’s theatre group in her early 20s when she joined theatre. She got opportunity to work with many theatre personalities like B.V. Karanth, Tapas Sen, and Khaled Chowdhury in those days. Later she moved to Kolkata and got associated with Rudraprasad Sengupta’s Nandikar, where she has been a lead actress. She got married and settled in Kolkata, quite active with film and theater world.

 

In 1985 she played female lead in Ghare Baire, a screen adaption of Rabindranath Tagore’s novel with the same name. In this love triangle she shared screen space with Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Chatterjee. It was the last movie of actress Jennifer Kendal, Shashi Kapoor's wife. Satyajit Ray sketched its script long before he made his first film Pather Panchali, though it was materialized only in the 1980s. She and Soumitra Chatterjee worked together after a long break of 30 years in 2015 with the film - Bela Seshe, directed by the duo, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee.
