Swaroop Kanchi Biography

Swaroop Kanchi is an independent filmmaker from Bangalore who has directed three films up-to-date. He scripted, produced and directed the films - Hong Kong Dreaming (2008), Bengaloored (2010) and Yeh Dil Ramta Jogi (2014) belonging to romance drama genre. He has also made a few short films before. Currently he is working on a big budget film based on Gautama Buddha. Hong Kong Dreaming and Bengaloored were shot in English while Yeh Dil Ramta Jogi was a Hindi film. He is Bangalore’s one of the best known independent film makers right now, and he has received offers from Bollywood also.

 

He hails from Bangalore, Karnataka. Currently he is Mumbai based. He was born on 29 June 1983. He was a student of designing and advertising, and he is a self-taught filmmaker. He started learning filmmaking at the age of 16. He experimented with low budget films such as “The end” and “Deja vu”, and also shot short films, before he made his first full length feature film, Hong Kong Dreaming in 2008. Many Hong Kong-based actors were featured in this film. He has also worked for Hollywood.

 

Something Taboo, Black Sugar, Sleeping with the Enemy's Son, Acid and Taxiwallah are some of his early short films he shot in US. Some of them have been shown at international film festivals and earned him accolades. Something Taboo dealt with misconceptions about sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, and was done to create social awareness. “Black Sugar” was premiered at the New York Film Festival. But his desire to work with Indian actors prompted him to move back to India and currently he is settled in Mumbai. Yeh Dil Ramta Jogi was his first attempt in Hindi language.
