Swaraj Kaushal Biography

Swaraj Kaushal is a Senior Advocate and a Criminal lawyer of Supreme Court of India, who became the senior advocate in 1986 at the age of only 34. He is better known as the youngest governor of the democratic country, India. He was appointed as the Governor of Mizoram on 8 February 1990 at the age of only 37, thus receiving the distinction of being the youngest governor of India. He served as the Governor of Mizoram from 8 February 1990 - 9 February 1993. His wife is one of the senior and influential leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party – Sushma Swaraj who owns the distinction of being the youngest Cabinet Minister in the country at the age of 25 in 1977. Swaraj has been appointed Karnataka government's standing counsel in 2009. Swaraj has also been credited as the the first Advocate General of Mizoram too.

 

Born in 1952 in Solan, Kaushal studied law at Punjab University. He married Sushma Swaraj in 1975 and the couple has one daughter. As a senior advocate, he is best known for defending George Fernandes in the famous Baroda dynamite case and also known for the release of Mizo leader Laldenga in the conspiracy trial in 1979. He has been associated with Socialist party and played prominent role in negotiations for Mizoram Peace Accord which ended 20 years of insurgency. He was the Constitutional Adviser to the underground Mizo National Front.

 

Apart from a successful administrative and law practising career, he has also been successful in politics. He became a Member of Parliament in the year 1998. He has also served a Member of Rajya Sabha in the late 1990’s.
