Swapan Chaudhuri Biography

Swapan Chaudhuri is a famous tabla player known for the association with Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Jasraj. He has accompanied leading Indian vocalists like Pandit Habib Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Dr. Balamurali Krishna and Nikhil Banerjee. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1997 for his overall contributions to Indian music. He is currently the director of percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California and in Basle, Switzerland. He is also a faculty at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California.

 

Swapan’s parents were music lovers and for the same reason, they wanted their son to learn music. Hence he was initiated to music at a younger age. Chaudhuri started tabla learning at the age of five. Later he trained from Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas of Kolkata of Lucknow Gharana. He took graduation in economics from Jadavpur University. He also completed Master’s degree in music. Later he travelled worldwide as an accompanist as well as a solo artist. He conducted tours in Europe, North and South America, and Asia.

 

Apart from performing in concerts, he has produced many recordings, including his own tabla solo and video tapes. His programs have been telecasted on Indian television as well as All India radio. His music reaches beyond the scope of Indian classical music to include performances and recordings with several foreign musicians. L. Shankar, John Handy, and the African drum master Malenga are among those leading names with whom Swapan Chaudhuri has associated with.
