Swami Ramdas Biography

Swami Ramdas was a spiritual leader from Kanhangad of Malabar, Kerala. He became a wandering monk at an early age and spread his knowledge and philosophy through his teachings and books. Mataji Krishnabai, Swami Satchidananda, Swami Mudrananda and Yogi Ramsuratkumar are his noted disciples.

He was born in 1884 at Hosdrug, Kerala and his birth name was Vittal Rao. Balakrishna Rao and Lalita Bai were his parents. During his early phase, he worked at a spinning mill and got married in the year 1908. But his domestic life gave him financial troubles only and he desired to get freed of all these difficulties. He got inspired by the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Ram Tirtha. After a lot of experiments he became convinced that God alone can give one eternal peace and happiness and started chanting the name of Lord Rama. His father advised him to chant the mantra "Sri Ram jai Ram jai jai Ram". He added an ‘Om’ before this mantra and started chanting it which gave him eternal relief. But very soon he got detached from physical world and left home at the age of 36.

In 1922, he left home by train. He was not at all sure what’s his destination and where should he go. He repeatedly uttered the mantra, "Sri Ram jai Ram jai jai Ram". He reached Srirangam and took a bath at holy Kaveri river. He donned the ochre robes of a sannyasin and underwent spiritual rebirth. He took the name Ramdas, and lived on charity. After his encounter with the sage, Ramana Maharshi he went into his first retreat in a cave in Arunachala. His devotees established Anandashram for him in Kanhangad, Kerala in 1931 where he spent the rest of his life.
