Swami Kuvalayananda Biography

Swami Kuvalayananda was a yoga specialist, researcher and educator from Gujarat. He is said to have laid foundation of yoga, through numerous scientific research works conducted on this subject. He made some major influences in modern Indian yoga, and also founded Kaivalyadhama Health and Yoga Research Center in Maharashtra in the year 1924. He lived during the period, 30 August 1883 – 18 April 1966.

 

Swami Kuvalayananda’s real name is Jagannatha Ganesa Gune. He was born in the year 1883 in village Dabhoi of present day Gujarat state. His father was a teacher and mother was a homemaker, and he belonged to a middle class family. He had to struggle a lot to complete matriculation. But after matriculation he received Jagannath Shankarsheth Sanskrit Scholarship which helped him to complete his graduation. Sri Aurobindo was a young lecturer at college then, and Jagannatha Ganesa got attracted to his principles and ideologies. He also took the decision of celibacy for his lifetime, almost at the same period. He was associated with the organization, the Khandesh Education Society at Amalner which aimed at education to all.

 

He was spiritually inclined and idealistic, yet he was a strict rationalist too, and he has learnt under different gurus like Rajaratna Manikrao. He tried to find scientific explanations for the various psychophysical effects of Yoga he experienced, and later extensively worked on it after founding Kaivalyadhama Health and Yoga Research Center in Lonavla, where he set up a laboratory and continued with his research works. Yoga Mimamsa is a quarterly publication where he published the first scientific experiments on yogic techniques. His research works impressed several Western researchers also. He later opened several branches of Kaivalyadhama across India.
