Sushma Swaraj Biography

Sushma Swaraj is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament representing Bharatiya Janata Party. She is the leader of opposition party of 15th Lok Sabha. She also served as the union cabinet minister of India and Chief Minister of Delhi formerly. She was born on 14th February 1952 in Palwal, Haryana in a Hindu family.

She was educated at S. D. College at Ambala Contonment and got her Bachelor of Arts degree. Then she studied LL.B at Law Department of Punjab University, Chandigarh. She was the President of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan of Haryana. She is a lawyer by profession. She married Swaraj Kaushal on 13th July 1975 and has one daughter. She was elected as the first women Chief Minister of Delhi.

She started her political career as a student leader in seventies and organized protests against the government of Indira Gandhi. She was elected as the member of Haryana legislative assembly in the election 1977 and 1987. She served as the Cabinet Minister of Labor and Employment from 1977 to 1979 in Devi Lal’s government as a Janata Party MLA. In 1980, she joined BJP.

She lost to Chiranji Lal Sharma of Congress party in 1980, 1984 and 1989 Lok Sabha elections. She was sent to Rajya Sabha in 1990 and was elected to 11th Lok Sabha from South Delhi in 1996. She served as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Minister of Telecommunications under the Vajpayee government in the 12th Lok Sabha. She left the Union Cabinet to become the first women Chief Minister of Delhi.

She contested against Sonia Gandhi in Bellary constituency in 1999 and lost. She became the member of Rajya Sabha on April 2000 from Uttarkhand. She was made the Minister of Health and Family Welfare in 2003. She greatly opposed Sonia Gandhi from becoming the Prime Minister of India as she is an Italian born Congress leader.

She was elected from Madhya Pradesh to Rajya Sabha in April 2006. In 2009 election, she won from the Vidisha constituency of Madhya Pradesh as a BJP candidate. She was made the leader of the opposition party in the 15th Lok Sabha of India.
