Surya Pratap Shahi Biography

Surya Pratap Shahi is a leading politician from Uttar Pradesh belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party and currently a cabinet minister in the ministry formed by Yogi Adityanath ministry in 2017. He currently holds the portfolio of Agriculture, Agriculture Education and Agriculture Research. He is also an agriculturist and lawyer in profession. He is currently serving as an MLA of Uttar Pradesh state assembly representing Pathardeva (Vidhan Sabha constituency). Shahi has got 99812 votes whereas his opponent Shakir Ali of Samajwadi Party has got only 56815 votes.

Surya Pratap Shahi was born on 11 December 1952 in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. Rajendra Kishor Shahi and Ram Pyari Devi are his parents. His father remained District Sanchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, who brought his son also to the world of politics at a very young age. His uncle Ravindra Kishor Shahi is also a leading politician of UP who has served as MLA and state minister too. After completing graduation, Shahi took LLB degree from Banaras Hindu University. While at BNU, he got elected as students’ union leader, marking his entry to politics. He is married to Rani Shahi since 1973.

He unsuccessfully contested state assembly elections for the first time in 1980, and joined state assembly for the first time with 1985 state assembly elections. He got elected from Kasia constituency, and got elected for the second time in 1991. He became minister of state UP during his second term as MLA. In the same minister, his position was elevated as cabinet Minister with the portfolio of Health and Family Welfare. He also won 1996 state assembly elections and remained state minister of Excise and Liquor Prohibition.
