Surjit Bindrakhia Biography 
Surjit Bindrakhia was a popular Punjabi singer and one of the greatest voices of Punjabi bhangra. He was known for his hekh – singing a note breathless. Dupatta Tera Satrang Da, Bas Kar Bas Kar, Tera Yaar Bolda, and Jatt Di Pasand are his top songs. He was given a special jury award at the 2004 Filmfare Awards for his contribution to Punjabi music. Bindrakhia died of a heart attack on November 17, 2003 at his residence at Mohali at a younger age of 39. Many of his albums were released after his death. He has also acted in a few movies as an extra before becoming a successful singer.
He was born on April 15, 1962 in Bindrakh, Rupnagar to Sucha Singh, and Gurcharan Kaur. His father was a famous village wrestler who made his village popular. Inspired by his father, Surjit too participated in wrestling and kabaddi and has won many competitions including intercollege bouts at the university level. Though his father’s dream was to see him as a wrestler, Surjit desired to become a singer. He started his career as a single while at college, singing for bhangra team. He formally learnt music from Atul Sharma. He also appeared as an extra actor in movies. It was lyricist Shamsher Sandhu who recognized the real talent of Surjit, who later penned lyrics for most of his songs. Music was given bu his guru, Atul Sharma.
This traditional singer emerged as the top bhangra singer of his time and noticed for wide range of sounds. Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da, released in 1995 was his first major break and still regarded as his best song. This particular song topped the charts in UK for many weeks. Bindrakhia is credited as being the first international superstar in bhangra music.
