Suri Bhagavantam Biography

Suri Bhagavantam was an Indian scientist and administrator from Madras Presidency. He was Vice chancellor of Osmania University and Director of Indian Institute of Science and Defence Research and Development Organization. He was president of the Current Science Association between 1970 and 1976 and Principal of University College, Andhra University. He was an associate of C. V. Raman for many of the research works after his Nobel Prize win.

 

Bhagavantam was born in Agiripalli village in Andhra Pradesh on October 14, 1909. His primary education was completed at Gudivada. Later he took degree in physics from Nizam College, Hyderabad. He was so inspired by the works of C. V. Raman that he left to Calcutta and joined him in 1928. C. V. Raman made him his associate. Bhagavantam completed his master’s degree during this period. With Raman’s suggestion, he joined Andhra University, Waltair as lecturer in Physics. He became popular as a lecturer that very soon rose to positions like Professor and Head of the department in 1938. In 1941, he became Principal of University College. The university later conferred on him the D.Sc. degree.

 

Suri Bhagavantam has also authored a few books related to physics. His significant contributions are The Theory of Groups and its Physical Applications along with Venkata Rayudu and Scattering of Light and Raman Effect. The Theory of Groups and its Physical Applications has been translated to Russian language. After 1947, he became scientific adviser in the Indian High Commission in London under V. K. Krishna Menon and conducted many lectures between 1948 and 1949. He returned to India and joined Osmania University as Head of Physics department. He became its Vice chancellor in 1952. Later he served in different organizations and retired from the service in 1969. He died on February 6, 1989.
