Surendra Verma Biography

Surendra Verma is a leading Hindi literature and playwright. His play Surya Ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pahli Kiran Tak, written in the year 1972 is his most popular work and it has been translated to six Indian languages. It was his first published book also. He has published about fifteen titles of short stories, satires, novels and plays and has been associated with NDS for a long time. He has won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1993 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1996 for the novel - for his novel Mujhe Chand Chahiye.

 

Verma was born in Jhansi on September 7, 1941. He started his career as a teacher. But later he concentrated full time on writing. His first play, Surya ki antim kiran sesurya kipahli kiran tak was staged by famous theatre cum film director, Amol Palekar in 1972, who later adapted it into Marathi film Anahat in 2003. This play talks about female sexuality, man-woman relationships and gender equality. Apart from Amol Palekar, this play has been the choice of many play directors. Another play, Chhote Saiyad bade Saiyad has been staged later by B. V. Karanth in 1980 and Ram Gopal Bajaj in 1989.

 

In 1976, he published his collection of short dramas titled - Nind Kyon Rat Bhar Nahin Ati. Qaid-e-Hayat, a short play is about the personal life of poet Mirza Ghalib and his hardships. His noted plays include – Dropadi, Surya Ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pahli Kiran Tak, Athwan sarg, Shakuntala ki anguthi, Rati Ka Kangan, Chhote Saiyad bade Saiyad and Qaid-e-hayat. Surendra Verma has also published a few novels of Mujhe Chand Chahiye (1993) is his most noted works. A few of his leading works include - Do Murdon Ke Liye Guldasta (2000) and Katna Shami Ka Vriksha Padmapankhuri Ki Dhar Se (2010).
