Surekha Sikri Biography

Surekha Sikri is a noted actress who works in movies, theatre as well as television. She has won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress twice - Tamas in 1988 and Mammo in 1995. Her negative role in television series, Balika Vadhu is also her significant work. This single role has given her ‘Negative Diva image’ on small screen and she received "Best actress in negative role" award at IDEA ITA Awards 2008. Her role as Dadisa still stands as an iconic character of Indian television.

She has also acted in television serials like Godaan (based on the original novel), Just Mohabbat, Saat phere, Kesar, Banegi apni baat, Sahar, Samay and Kabhie Kabhie. Apart from national award winning movies, her significant works are Kissa Kursi Ka (1978), Parinati (1988), Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), Naseem (1995), Sardari Begum (1996), Sarfarosh (1999), Hari-Bhari(2000), Zubeidaa (2000), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (2004) and Raincoat (2004). She has been a popular choice of film makers who are attracted to parallel cinema /off-beat movies. She has worked with film directors like Shoojit Sircar, Dibakar Banerjee and Qaushiq Mukherjee. She was working in NSD while she got offer for the movie, Tamas.

Surekha was born on April 19, 1945 in Delhi. She became first successful as a theatre artist. She began with GEC, AMU Aligarh. In the year 1968, she graduated from National School of Drama. She worked with the NSD Repertory for more than 10 years before she got shifted to Mumbai. While she landed in theatre works, playwrights were mostly men oriented. Yet she got a room to find herself in good roles. Her real dream was to become a journalist. But she reached theatre and film industry and became popular as well. She moved to television when she shifted from Delhi to Mumbai.
