Sunitha Rao Biography

Sunitha Rao is a former American professional tennis player of Indian Origin. Her parents belong to Karnataka and she was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey where she completed her education and started her professional career. She has participated in WTA Tour several times. Though she played most of her time for US, she has played for India on the Fed Cup and 2008 Summer Olympics. Among Indian women players she has an outstanding record of 8 career titles on the ITF Women's Circuit and has also managed to reach 7 finals in singles. She played doubles partnered with Sania Mirza, representing India in 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and could reach only the second round.

 

Her parents are originally from Mangalore, Karnataka and she spoke Kannada at her home. She was born in Jersey City of US in October 27, 1985. Currently her family lives in Bradenton, Florida while she studies at Babson College, Boston, Massachusetts. She started her professional tennis career in 2002. She played her first WTA match at the 2002 Brasil Open – Women's Singles event and managed to reach the second round. Though she defeated Vanessa Henke in the first round, she faced defeat from Anastasia Myskina in the second round.

 

Hansol Korea Open 2004, Internationaux de Strasbourg 2005, Sunfeast Open 2005 and Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic 2006 are the major tournaments she played later. In 2008 she entered PTT Pattaya Open via a Lucky Loser spot and reached its third round and was beaten by Alona Bondarenko. She retired from her professional career in 2008.
