Sunil Mittal Biography

Sunil Mittal is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist and Chairman and Group CEO of Bharti Enterprises. He runs the India’s largest GSM-based mobile phone service and the fifth largest company in India with a turnover of more than $8.3 billion with 190 million customers across 19 countries in Asia and Africa.

He was born on 23rd October 1957 in Ludhiana in Punjab. His parents are Sat Pal Mittal who served as the Member of the Parliament from Ludhiana and Lalita. He joined Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie and then Scindia School at Gwalior. He graduated from Punjab University in 1976. He got Bachelor of Arts degree there. Then he studied science degree at Arya College for Boys in Ludhiana. He married Nyna and has three children.

He started his business in April 1976 when he was only 18 years old with an investment of Rs. 20,000. He made crankshafts for bicycles. In 1980 with his brothers Rakesh and Rajan, he started an Import Enterprise called Bharti Overseas Trading Corporation. In 1981 he purchased import license from exporting companies located in Punjab. He imported portable electric power generators of Suzuki motors from Japan.

He started a factory to assemble push button phones in India in 1984 to replace the old model rotary phones. He made tie up with Siemens AG of Germany in the manufacturing of electronic push button phones. In 1990s he started manufacturing many other goods such as fax machines, cordless phones and other telecom related products. His first push button phone was called as Mitbro.

When mobile phone network licenses were auctioned in India in 1992, he bid for that. His plans were approved by Government of India in 1994. He started the AirTel service in Delhi in 1995. Within few years he could earn more than two million mobile subscribers. He signed an agreement with Wal-Mart to start retail stores in India in November 2006. He received many awards and honors including Padma Bhushan award in 2007.
