Sunil Dabas Biography

Sunil Dabas is a coach of national female Kabaddi team of India. As a coach she has led the national team to win seven international gold medals, including the 2010 Asian Games and the World Cup 2012. One of the best coaches of Indian sports this time she was given the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2012. She was honoured with Padma Shri by government of India in 2014 for her overall contributions to Indian sports, especially Kabaddi. She is the first woman Kabaddi coach to win Dronacharya Award, and fourth from the field of Kabaddi. Government of Haryana honoured her with Sports Women Achiever Award 2014.

 

She hails from Jhajjar district of Haryana. She was born and brought up in Mohammadpur Majra village in Beri of Jhajjar. She owns a strong academic record with multiple degrees including doctorate in sports. Her early education was done at her native village. She completed Master of Physical Education from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, M. Phil from Kurukshetra University, and Ph.D. in sports psychology from Agra University. She joined as coach of national female Kabaddi team in 2005.

 

She coached the Indian national team to won gold at 2006 South Asian Games, 2nd Asian Championship in 2007, 3rd Asian Championship in 2007, 2009 South Asian Games, 2010 Asian Games, 2012 Women's Kabaddi World Cup and 4th Indoor Asian Games in 2013, thus holding a strong record as a coach. Apart from her career as India’s coach, she is also a lecturer. She serves as associate professor and the Head of the Department of Physical Education at Dronacharya Government Post-Graduate College, Gurgaon right now. Apart from her career as a professor and coach, she has also authored over a dozen of books related to sports.
