Sunetra Gupta Biography

Sunetra Gupta is a US based popular novelist and writer, with Indian origin. Kolkata is her birth place. As a writer she shot to fame with her masterpiece work, The Glassblower’s Breath, published in 1993. The book travels through the journey of a woman and her emotional, intellectual and sexual experiences. This story of a single day mixes fantasies, thoughts and dreams of a woman who marries a rich man, but struggles to conform to society’s diktats. She was the translator of the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore and has published several novels in English.

 

Sunetra is one among the most popular writers of Indian English modern writers and published several novels in English. She is a recipient of numerous awards and honours. In 2012 her fifth novel, So Good in Black was long listed for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. Sahitya Akademi Award and the Southern Arts Literature Prize are other major awards won by her. She has been shortlisted for the Crossword Award, and long listed for the Orange Prize. Memories of Rain, The Glassblower's Breath (1993), Moonlight into Marzipan (1995), A Sin of Colour (1999) and So Good in Black (2009) are her published books.

 

Sunetra Gupta was born on 15 March 1965 in Kolkata to Dhruba and Minati Gupta. She completed her graduation in biology and later completed Ph.D. from Imperial College London. She currently serves as a Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. A researcher, she has excelled in this field and won many accolades too. She has been awarded with Scientific Medal by the Zoological Society of London and the Royal Society Rosalind Franklin Award for her scientific research. Her portrait was on display during the prestigious Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition in 2013.
