Sunderlal Bahuguna Biography 
Sunderlal Bahuguna is an environmentalist and leader of Chipko movement. He is an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and has faith in the philosophies of Non-violence and Satyagraha. He was born in the village Maroda ner Tehri. In his early days he fought against untouchability and organized tribal women in his anti-liquor drive.
He was born on 9th January 1927. Though he was born in affluent family his mother had to work hard to finish the work that was considered only fit for women. He took a solemn vow to ease the burden of Indian women. He was only thirteen when he started his political career. His friend Sridev Suman influenced him. Suman was a nationalist and he taught Sundarlal how to create change through nonviolence. In 1956 he married Vimla and after his marriage he retired from his social life.
He dedicated his life to save the environment through Chipko movement. He went on hunger strikes at the bank of river Bhagirathi to launch his protest. He went on a long fast during the tenure of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. When the case was still in Supreme Court, he worked for the Tehri Dam project and was arrested on 20th April, 2001.
He lives today at Koti and continues his environmental work. He is a passionate defender of Himalaya people and struggles to defend Indian rivers. He has got so many awards. He got Padma Shree award by the Government of India in 1981. He also received Jamnalal Bajaj Award for constructive work in the year1986 and Padma Vibhushan Award in 2009.
