Sundara Ramaswamy Biography

Sundara Ramaswamy was a famous writer and novelist associated with Tamil literature. Widely regarded as an exponent of Tamil modern literature, he contributed in the form of fiction and poetry. He also translated several books including Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's Malayalam novel, Thottiyude Makan and also authored several criticism works. He learnt Malayalam during his childhood days, and start learning Tamil only at the age of 18. Yet his contributions to Tamil literature till his death at the age of 74 years are immensely huge.

 

Sundara Ramaswamy was born on 30 May 1931 in Thazhuviya Mahadevarkoil of Kanyakumari district, present day Tamil Nadu. He spent his childhood years in Kottayam, Travancore where his father worked, and Malayalam personalities and writings put a great influence on him and his works since early days. As his childhood days were spent in Kerala, he learnt only Malayalam. When the family shifted to Nagercoil of present day Tamil Nadu, he continued schooling there. At that time Kanya Kumari was a part of Kerala state (Travancore kingdom). He was not a brilliant student in studies. At the age of 10 he was struck by rheumatism and was virtually bed ridden for a few years which affected his school going and studies a lot. Later he was forced to discontinue studies.

 

He started learning Tamil at the age of 18. Ramaswamy began his literary career at the age of20, translating Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's Malayalam novel, Thottiyude Makan into Tamil. He published his first short story, "Muthalum Mudivum" in Pudimaipithan Ninaivu Malar, marking his literal career in Tamil. His first published novel was Oru Puliamarathin Kathai. He was influenced by the works of great reformers and social reformers of Indian society and remained a good friend of M. Govindan till his death. He died in the United States from pulmonary fibrosis in 2005, aged 74.
