Sundar Singh Gurjar Biography

Sundar Singh Gurjar is an Indian Paralympic javelin thrower from Rajasthan. He also plays short put and discus throw. In the 16th Para Athletics National Championship in Panchkula, India, he set a new world record by winning three gold medals. In 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, Gurjar created history by becoming the first Indian to win gold in men's javelin throw event. In 2016 men’s F46 javelin throw event at Paralympics, Gurjar conspicuously missed out on competing in the same event which gave gold to India’s Devendra Jhajharia. He was disqualified from the event since he did not report for the roll call. Gurjar was warming up in the stadium and he lost a medal due to miscommunication.

 

Sundar Singh Gurjar hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was born on 1 January 1996. He has been interested in sports since young, and used to participate in school and college sporting events and competitions. He participated in the general category till 2015, till the age of 19. The fatal incident occurred at his friend’s home when he was 19. He was placing a tin shade at his friend’s home when he got injured at left hand palm. Later he had to cut it.

 

The setback happened in life couldn’t put down the courage and spirit of the youngster, and he started competing in para athletic events from next year onwards. Currently he is India’s one of the most precious young players. At 2016 Rio Paralympics he registered the 'A' qualification mark after his performance of 59.36m in 8th Fazza IPC Athletics Grand Prix, Dubai, which brought him to limelight. There was no turning back after that. He has been coached by renowned R. D. Singh, known for spotting young talents.
