Sumithra (actress) Biography

Sumithra is an Indian actress who concentrates most on south Indian movies. She has been quite active in the 1980s, mostly portraying lead roles and with late 1980s she moved to character roles. She has been quite active since 1990s portraying mother roles. Sumithra was married to noted Kannada film maker of commercial cinema and screenplay writer - D. Rajendra Babu. Noted actress Umashankari is the eldest daughter of this couple. Their younger daughter Nakshatra has also debut film world in 2011 through the movie Doo. Sumithra is one of the rare actresses of Indian cinema who played lead role with both the glowing stars of Indian cinema – Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth and later portrayed their mother role as well.

Sumithra was born in Thrissur, Kerala. Her father worked in an oil refining company. She took formal training in classical dance forms from Murugappan Master. "Mirthachala' released in 1974 marked her acting debut at the age of 19. Malayalam movie Nirmalyam was also released at the same time. After that she moved to other language movies as well. Avalum Penn Thaane (1974) was her first Tamil movie and Mugiyada Kathe, her Kannada debut. Later she played lead heroine role with almost all leading stars of the industry including Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Sivakumar, Vishnuvardhan etc.

 
Mogam Muppadhu Varusham, Ragupathi Raagava Rajaram, Justice Gopinath, Veera pandiyan, Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, Singaravelan, Chinna Thambi, Panakaran and Iraivan Kodutha Varam are some of her memorable Tamil roles. Most recently she appeared in Veeram, Singam, Singam 2 etc. She played Suriya’s mother’s role in both the parts of action Thriller Singam.
