Sumana Kittur Biography

Sumana Kittur is a film personality and journalist from Mysore, Karnataka. She is a highly talented film director and lyricist who has contributed critically acclaimed movies to Kannada cinema. Edegarike (2012) and Kallara Santhe (2009) are her highly acclaimed movies. In 2009 she won Karnataka State Special Jury Award for Best Director for the movie, Kallara Santhe. Edegarike earned her Karnataka State Film Award for 3rd Best Film and Bangalore International Film Festival Special Jury Award, apart from nominations at Filmfare and Bangalore Times Film Awards for best director.  Kiragoorina Gayyaligalu (2016) is her latest release.

 

Kittur is the name of her native village and this tag is added to her name. D. Sumana Kittur was born in Kittur of Mysore District of Karnataka. Her father owned a small film talkies and that’s how she got acquainted to movies at a young age. The film theatre has been now shut down for various reasons. Sumana's mother still lives in the same village. After graduation she moved to Bangalore where she started her career as an assistant director in the mid-2000s. She worked with director K. M. Chaitanya as an associate director and lyricist for the movie, Aa Dinagalu in 2007. She penned the title track for the movie, sung by Vijay Yesudas.

 

She works as a lyricist for all her movies since then. The following year she made her directorial debut through the film, Slum Bala, starring Duniya Vijay and Shubha Poonja. 2009movie, Kallara Santhe starring Yash, Hariprriya and Sudharani was a major turning point of her career. Later she directed and penned lyrics for the movies, Edegarike and Kiragoorina Gayyaligalu. She has directed only five movies in the past eight years and her movies have always been critics’ delight.
