Sulakshana Pandit Biography

Sulakshana Pandit is a former actress of Bollywood and the sister of music directors Jatin-Lalit. She is a successful playback singer also who has won Filmfare for “tu hi sagar hai’ of Sankalp in 1975. She also won Miyan Tansen award of the same song. She has been nominated for Filmfare best singer for ‘Bande re kahe preet’ a classical number of the movie Sankoch in 1976. She is the niece of Pandit Jasraj, classical vocalist. As heroine, her successful movies are Apnapan, Hera pheri, Uljhan, Sankoj and Raaj. Her other movies list include Salakhein, Dharam kanta, Gora, Do waqt ki roti, Kala suraj, Bundaal baaz, Thief of Baghdad and Khandan. Despite being the singer of Jatin-Lalit music directors she didn’t make use of the situation to get opportunities for movies in the present times. She has sung for Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi and Oriya movies. she has got opportunity to sing in live concerts along with the legends – Mohd.Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Her sister Vijeta Pandit is also an actress who is married to music director Aadesh Srivasthava.

As an actress and singer, she worked in Bollywood during 70’s and 80’s and her contributions are not significantly big. She debut Bollywood with Ulchan opposite Sanjeev Kumar in the year 1975. This movie was a suspense thriller. She has acted in a Bengali movie opposite super star Utham Kumar, Bondie is the movie title. As a singer, she debut as a child singer aside Lata Mangeshkar for the song ‘Saat Samunder’ of Taqdeer.   

As a singer her best works include – Bekar-e-dil tu gaaye jaa of Door ki raahi, Sapnom ka raja koi of Chalte chalte, Aj pyare pyare se lagtha hai of Uljhan, Mausam mausam of Thodi si bewafai, Boliye surly of Griha pravesh and Ghadi Milan ki aaye of Ek baap cheh bête. She is unmarried till now. She proposed to her first co-star of Hindi movies Sanjeev Kumar. But he rejected it many times because he was not able to get over the rejection of Hema Malini and he too, was a bachelor till his death.

Most recently she faced financial problems and now, his sister Vijetha Pandit and her family have helped her to settle those problems.
