Sukumar Sen Biography

Sukumar Sen was a very famous linguist and scholar from Bengal, who was also verse in ancient scripts and languages like Pali, Prakrit and Sanskrit. He served as a professor in various universities and also a recipient of Premchand Roychand Scholarship and PhD. As a scholar he has also explored many ancient books and has also published many research books like Bangala Sahityet Itihas, Bangala Sahitye Gadya (1934) and The Etymological Dictionary of Bengali (in two volumes, 1971). 'Diner Pore Din Je Gelo’ is his autobiography work.

 

Sen was born in 1900 in Gotan, near Shyamsundar in the present day Bardhaman district. He was born to Harendra Nath Sen and Nabanalini Devi. His father was a lawyer by profession. His education was completed at Bun and Bardhaman. He completed Sanskrit from the Government Sanskrit College in 1921 and Comparative Linguistics from Kolkata in 1923. He also completed PhD. After studies he joined the University of Calcutta as a lecturer in 1930. He served as a professor in the same university for next 34 years till retirement.

 

He was the first to explore the Old Indo-Aryan syntax in his book, Use of Cases in Vedic Prose and Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit. Though active in his teaching career, he continued with his research works and published many books and papers. He also analysed the syntax of Middle Indo-Aryan in An Outline of Syntax of Middle Indo-Aryan. He addressed themes to Bengali literature. His crime stories were compiled and published in 2009 titled Galpa Samgraha. For his work, Bangala Sahityet Itihas commentary was written by none other than Tagore and when its English edition was publishewd, preface was written by Nehru.
