Sukumar Azhikode Biography

Sukumar Azhikode was a writer, critic and orator of Malayalam. He was a scholar in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English languages. As a writer his most noted work was Tatvamasi (1984) in Malayalam, a book on Indian Philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads which won 12 awards including Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award and Vayalar Award. In 2007, he refused Padma Shri stating that such award is a form of discrimination and that it’s against Indian constitution. He was one of the most prominent critics of Kerala who has criticized many social evils as well as the bad principles of politicians. He was a friend of controversies throughout his life.

 

There has been a running battle of words between Azhikode and Achuthanandan, when Achuthanandan was the chief minister of Kerala and the media celebrated the events continuously for months. Such open criticisms using statements helped Sukumar to remain in limelight. He also criticized actor Mohanlal and filed sue against him too, for his remarks. But both these celebrated people visited him when he was undergoing treatment in Amala Medical College, Thrissur. Chief minister Oommen Chandy and many politicians and celebrities too visited him at Amala Hospital and chief minister took all the responsibilities of his treatment too. Sukumar Azhikode passed away on on 24 January 2012 at the age of 85, suffering from cancer. In the last two years of his life, he was one among the most talked persons of Kerala, mainly due to open battle with chief minister.   

 

Sukumar Azhikode was born on 26 May 1926 in Azhikode, Kerala. He was a bachelor till his death. He was in love with Vilasini teacher at his young age. Due to busy schedule in his life, he couldn’t marry and both remained bachelors forever. She visited him at Amala hospital during his last stage of life and they met after a long period. It drew media attention that time and she expressed her desire to take care of him during the last stage of his life.   

 

A few of the notable works of this writer of modern times include - Sankara Kurup Vimarshikkapedunnu, Aakasam Nashtapetunna India, Khandanavum Mandanavum, Purogamanasahityavum Mattum, Mahatmavinte Margam, Vayanayute Swargattil, Aasaante Seethaakavyam and Guruvinte Dukham.
