Sukhen Das Biography

Sukhen Das is a filmmaker and actor associated with Bengali cinema. He was also a screenwriter. As an actor and director he is best known for the commercial hits - Pratishodh (1981) and Maa Ek Mandir (1988). He was associated with both commercial movies as well as critically acclaimed ones, such as Milan Tithi, Sayani, Maan Abhiman (1978) and Singhaduar (1978). He excelled as an actor, screenwriter and a successful director and he predominantly worked in the decade of 1980 as a director. He entered film scene as a child actor in 1949 with the film – Dasiputra.

Though he had the potential to enact comic roles he was type casted as a tragic actor onscreen. Many of his scripts have been commercially successful. He gained recognition and appreciation as an action hero through the film – Pratisodh. He directed and scripted the movie too, and he shared screen space with Uttam Kumar for the movie. Daan Pratidaan (1992) and Amar Kantak (1987) too were his popular roles.

His real name is Sukhendranath Das. He was born in Kolkata in 1938. He had to spend some of his childhood days in an orphanage and couldn’t complete his studies due to financial problems. Later he took shelter in a doctor's chamber and it was during these days when he was spotted by director Debnarayan Gupta at a film studio, where young Das used to frequently roam around. He gave young Das a small role in the film – Dasiputra in 1949. Since then he played child artist roles in many movies of 1950s. Got associated with movies in the late 1940s he was active in the industry till his death in 2004. He was last seen in - Arjun Aamar Naam and Biswasghatak, both released in 2003.
