Sukhdev Thapar Biography

Sukhdev Thapar, commonly known as Sukhdev was an Indian revolutionary associated with India’s freedom struggle movement. He was only 23 when he along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru were executed at Lahore following Lahore conspiracy case. He along with his co-ordinates was executed on 23 March 1931. Trail and execution of these three patriots is regarded as one of the most important chapters of India’s freedom struggle movement. Though Congress made many attempts to save their lives it proved futile. The triple execution proved to be the greatest fuel and inspiration to many young Indians to become revolutionary and join freedom struggle movement. The nation as a whole opposed this heinous act of British as well. The sacrifice of these three revolutionaries played a major role in India’s freedom also.

 

He was born on 15 May 1907 in Ludhiana, Punjab. Since childhood discrimination of British on Indians deeply rooted in his mind and he desired to draw the foreign power from his mother nation. Sukhdev was a member of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and took active part in various revolutionary activities. He was one of the founding members of Naujawan Bharat Sabha, to boost patriotism and encouragement for youth to join revolutionary movement for Indian freedom.

 

Sukhdev is best known for his participation as a revolutionary in Lahore Conspiracy Case in 1928 and Prison Hunger Strike in 1929, with rose British’s anger. The revolutionaries widely protested the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. He along with Bhagat Singh, and Shivaram Rajguru were involved in the assassination of Deputy Superintendent of Police, J.P. Saunders to take revenge on the death of Rai. Following Central Assembly Hall bombings in New Delhi in 1929, the three revolutionaries were arrested and sentenced to death. Singh was informed just 11 hours before his execution. After execution, they were secretly cremated inside prison’s promises to avoid wide protests.
