Sujit Kumar Biography

 

Sujit Kumar is known to be the first superstar of Bhojpuri movies. But for Bollywood fans, he is the best friend of superstar Rajesh Khanna playing mouth organ for him in the mega duper hit song ‘Mere sapnom ki rani jab aayega tu’ of Aradhana. He has done numerous character roles in Bollywood along with Rajesh Khanna and Shakthi Samantha team. He has acted as negative character and spy roles also. He has also produced and directed a few movies. Sunny Deol-Manisha Koirala starrer Champion and Darraar of Juhi Chawla, Arbaaz Khan and Rishi Kapoor are the couple of Bollywood movies he has produced.

 

Sujit Kumar was born in a small village of Varanasi in the year 1934. He has done around 150 Bollywood movies and 25 Bhojpuri movies and most of those Bollywood movies he played a significant role, who contributes a lot to the flow of storyline. He debut with Honeymoon in 1960. He belongs to the team of suspense thrillers Lal bangla and Ek saal pehla. But it is his team up with Rajesh Khanna that he is remembered most. Apart from Aradhana, they together have acted in a string of movies like Amar Prem, Haathi mere saathi, Ittefaq, Mehbooba, Aan milo sajna, Aakhir Kyon, Roti, Avataar and Mere jeevan saathi. Apart from Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra and Rakesh Roshan have been his best friends from Bollywood.  

 

His best Bhojpuri movies list include Champa Chameli, Bidesiya, Ganga Kahe Pukar Ke, Sampurna Teerth Yatra, Sajai Da Maang Hamar, Loha Singh, Dangal, Aaeel Basant Bahar,Pan Khaye Saiyya Hamar, Patoh Bitiya, Mai Ke Lal and Naag Panchami. During 1980’s, his role changed from best friend and spy roles to inspector or policeman roles. His best Bollywood movies include Tiranga, Krantiveer, Boxer, Arpan, Qaidi, Ram bharose, Adalat, The burning train, Amir gareeb, Nalayak, Amba, Parchhaeen, Insaaf ki tarazu, Aakhein, Kaala Baazar, Charas, Ram Balraam, The great gambler, Mahaan, Barood, Hum rahi, Asmaan Se Ooncha, Jaltha badan, Humraahi, Dharam veer, Dream girl, Haqueeqat, Charithra heen, Lalkaar, Aan milo sajna, Hum Rahe Na Hum, Resham ki dori, Shubh Kamna and Raaz.

 

Sujit Kumar died on February 5, 2010 after prolonged illness. He was suffering from cancer since 2007. His roles may be short, yet they played a significant role in placing Rajesh Khanna as the superstar of Bollywood, as it’s not possible to assume ‘Mere sapnom ki rani’ in a hill station and a train without Sujit Kumar!
