Suhasini Ganguly Biography

Suhasini Ganguly was a freedom fighter from Bengal who lived during the period, 3 February 1909 - 23 March 1965. She lived during the period, 3 February 1909 - 23 March 1965. She was a revolutionary leader who participated in several revolutionary activities related to Indian freedom struggle movement. She was a close friend of Padma Shri Bina Das, another revolutionary and freedom fighter from Bengal. She met with a road accident in 1965, and was admitted in a hospital. She lost her life because of negligence. She got tetanus infection and died. She was only 56 then.

 

Suhasini Ganguly was born on 3 February 1909 in Khulna, Bengal. Her birth place now belongs to Bangladesh. Abinashchandra Ganguly and Sarala Sundara Devi were her parents. She passed matriculation, and while doing her intermediate, she got a teacher’s job at a deaf and dumb school in Kolkata. It was during her days in Kolkata when she came into contact with well-known freedom fighters, Kalyani Das and Kamala Dasgupta and she joined the revolutionary Jugantar Party and also Chhatri Sangha, a semi-revolutionary organization exclusively for women. Later her activities were caught by British and she was forced to flee to a French colony, Chandannagar.

 

Following the very famous Chittagong armoury raid on 18 April 1930, she and Sashadhar Acharya disguised as a marriage couple gave refuge to a few revolutionaries involved with the crime. However in a British raid, followed by gunshot, Jiban Ghoshal got killed and others including Ganguly were captured, but released very soon. For helping Bina Das in the unsuccessful murder attempt of Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson in 1932, she got arrested and jailed till 1938.

 

Once got released she joined Communist party, and doesn’t participate in Quit India Movement as it was against the policy rules of her newly joined party. But she helped her Congress colleagues for which she was arrested and detained between 1942 and 1945. Soon after independence too, she got arrested several times for her communist activities.
