He has been involved with a legal battle with his in-laws for the custody of his daughter till now.

Suhaib Ilyasi was born on 15 November 1966. His father is Jameel Ilyasi, who was the head of All India Imams Organisation and the imam of a mosque Kasturba Gandhi Marg in central Delhi. He met his future wife Anju at Jamia Millia Islamia in the late 1980s. They got married in London in 1993 under the Special Marriage Act, when their relationship was not approved by parents from both sides. Though they returned to India the following year, Anju refused to live with her in-laws, and she moved to her brother’s residence in London after 6 months. The couple reconciled and they returned to India the following year, and a daughter was born to them.

During their stay in London, the couple launched a show, India's Most Wanted. Anju initially anchored the show, and later Suhaib too entered the field. There have been problems in their marriage and Anju moved to London as well. But she returned in February 1999, and the couple brought a new apartment and finally moved into the house in December 1999. On 10 January 2000, she was found stabbed to death in her apartment. Though it was speculated to be a suicide case of dowry harassment, it was later proved that Suhaib Ilyasi stabbed his wife to death. On December 20, 2017, he was convicted for the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, shocking the television industry, and the TV audience who regularly watched his ‘crime show’ episodes.
