Sudipto Chatterjee Biography

Sudipto Chatterjee is an Indian writer, scholar and theatre personality, known for his contributions to English and Bengali theatre works. His play ‘Man Of The Heart’ portraying the life of great song writer, Lalon Fakir is his masterpiece work. This research project work was showed at various international venues including Berkeley, New York, Kolkata, Chicago and Los Angeles. In 2010, it was performed in London’s Barbican Centre. Sudipto has also translated many Bengali and Sanskrit works to English. In 2011, he completed the first full English translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s play Bisarjan. At present he is a research partner in the Global Theatre Histories project at Ludwig Maximilians-Universitat Munchen. He received his PhD in Performance Studies from New York University in the year 1999. He has authored 16 plays, belonging to English and Bengali languages.

 

He was born in Kolkata to Sisir Chatterjee and Tripti Chatterjee and both were teachers in profession. Sudipto is the youngest of three siblings. Right from the childhood he was influenced by the works of his neighbour, Ajitesh Bandhopadhyay, the founder-member of Bengali theatre group Nandikar. After school studies, he joined St. Xavier's College, Kolkata to study BA English literature. It was during this time when he got seriously attached to theatre. He also got into contact, Ramaprasad Banik during this time. He also associated with television productions and plays during this period.

 

Sudipto, then pursued further study on dramatics at National Theater Institute, USA and completed his Ph.D with distinction from the Tisch School Of The Arts, New York University. During this time, he wrote many plays and worked with theatre workshops. He has also worked as faculty at Department of Drama and Dance at Tufts University, University of California, Berkeley and Loughborough University.
