Sudha Murthy Biography

Sudha Murthy is a social worker, IT teacher and author from Karnataka, India. She is the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and a member of public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation. She has founded many organisations like orphanages and has strived hard for rural development. She played a significant role in introducing libraries, computers and IT education in government schools of Karnataka. She established the 'The Murthy Classical Library of India' at Harvard University. Her Kannada work, Dollar Sose was translated to English as Dollar Bahu and used for a television series for ZEE television. She has also acted in a couple of movies. She is the wife of Narayana Murthy, IT industrialist and the co-founder of Infosys.


Sudha Murthy was born on 19 August 1950 as Sudha Kulkarni, in Shiggaon as the daughter of famous surgeon, Dr. R.H. Kulkarni. She was brought up by her parents and grandparents and her association with maternal grandparents inspired her to write the first book, How I Taught my Grandmother to Read & Other Stories. Murthy completed a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the B.V.B. College of Engineering & Technology and received a gold medal. She completed an M.E. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science and won gold medal again. Then she became the first female engineer hired at India's largest auto manufacturer TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company.

 
She met Narayana Murthy while working at TELCO and they got married. She was one among the investors of Infosys, which later grew as the biggest IT firm of the country. She was given Raja-Lakshmi Award in 2004 for her outstanding contributions to social work. In 2006, Murthy was awarded the Padma Shri and in 2011, Murthy was conferred honorary LL.D. She has authored Kannada books - Dollar Sose, Runa, Kaveri inda Mekaangige, Hakkiya Teradalli, Athirikthe and Guttondu Heluve.
