Sudarsan Pattnaik Biography

Sudarsan Pattnaik is a sand artist from Odisha, who often creates Sand sculptures for social themes, protests etc. A renowned sand artist of the country he has represented India in 60 international Sand Sculpture championship and festivals all around the world. He has also won 27 championships within the country. For his contributions towards this field, Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 2014. He was given this honour at the age of 37, thus earning this civilian honour at a very young age in the field of arts. He often pays tributes to persons and incidents through his sand sculptures.

 

He is also a recipient of numerous international honours. He has received People’s choice awards at Germany 5 times, which itself is a record. He won People’s Choice Awards at the 1st Moscow International Sand Sculpture Championship held in Russia. He also won three medals in North American solo sand sculpture championship, and many other championships in other parts of the world too. In 2012 he set a Guinness World record for creating World’s tallest sand castle. He is an extra ordinary sand artist who has made India proud with his magnificent sand sculptures.

 

Sudarsan Pattnaik was born on 15 April 1977 in Puri, Odisha. He belonged to a very poor family which could not even afford a proper education. He was inclined towards this form of art since childhood and he made his first sand sculpture at the age of 7. Without any formal training he makes beautiful sand sculptures which make others hard to believe. He is the first artist to introduce sand art in India, and also he is the first artist who brought international acclaims to his mother nation. His most applauded sand sculpture is ‘The Black Taj Mahal’ which brought his international acclaim. He is one among the very rare artists who won 50 international sand sculpture championships and festivals in sand art.
