Subrata Roy Biography 
Subrata Roy is the founder and chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar, which holds Indian Premier League cricket team - Pune Warriors India. The organization also has varied interests like London's Grosvenor House, New York's Plaza Hotel, Aamby Valley City and Force India. Roy founded the company in 1978. In 2010, he was named as one among the 10 Most Powerful People of India by India Today. Time Magazine named this organization as ‘the second largest employer in India' after the Indian Railways in the year 2004.
Roy was born on 10 June 1948 in Araria, Bihar. His schooling was completed at Kolkata and then diploma in mechanical engineering from Government Technical Institute, Gorakhpur. He started business in Gorakhpur. Roy founded the Sahara Group in 1978 with a chit fund of just Rs. 2000. It was grouped under RNBCs that accept deposits of very low amounts. Later it went on to become the largest conglomerate of India with diversified business interests including real estate, media, entertainment, tourism, healthcare, and hospitality. Roy received honorary doctorate in business leadership from the University of East London in 2013. He has also been awarded with honorary D. Litt. by Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga.
Business Icon of the Year award at the Powerbrands Hall of Fame Awards in London in 2011, ITA – TV Icon of the Year 2007, the Global Leadership Award in 2004, Businessmen of the Year Award in 2002, the Best Industrialist Award in 2002 and Vishisht Rashtriya Udaan Samman (2010) are the major awards received by him. On February 26, 2014, the Supreme Court of India ordered the arrest of Subrata Roy as he failed to refund Rs.24000-crore deposits his company to its investors. He arrested on 28 February 2014 by Uttar Pradesh police in a dispute with Market Regulator – SEBI. He surrendered before the police on 28th February Friday morning.
