Subodh Sarkar Biography

Subodh Sarkar is a noted Bengali writer, poet and editor. Most recently in 2013, he received Sahitya Academy award for his poetry collection, ‘Dwaipayan Hrader Dhare’. Shakti Chattopadhyay Binodan Vichitra Puroskar in 1997 and Bangla Akademi Anita-Sunil Basu Puroskar in 2000 are other major honours received by him. He was married to noted Bengali poet and feminist from Kolkata, Mallika Sengupta. He started his literal career in the late 1970’s. Till now, he published 22 books of poems and one travelogue on America. Sarkar has participated in several International Poetry Festivals across the globe. Currently he is an Associate professor of English, City College, Kolkata.

 

He was born in 1958 in Krishna Nagar, Nadia district of Bengal. His first book of poems was published in the late seventies. Later he became one of the major writers of Bengali literature. Sarkar is the editor of Bhashanagar, a Bangla culture magazine. He is known for the active participation in several international writers’ festivals. Sun Moon Lake city conference in Taiwan and the New Symposium in Greece need special note. Sab Rasta Rome-e Jae Na, Riksha Mesh Katha, Chandradosh Oshudhe Sarena, Adai Hat Manush, Krittikae Sonnet Cangaroo, Pratibader Kabita, Boma Bananor Class, Bhalo Jaygata Kothae, Eka Narakgami, Sab Rasta Rome-e Jae Na and Kallu are his major poetry collections.

 

He has co-authored 3 books with his wife - Sohag Sharbari, Abhiman, Prem O Pratibader Kabita and Subodh Mallika Square and has also done a few translation works apart from editing. Sarkar is a reader in English literature at City College, Kolkata at present. Since 2010, he serves as the guest editor of Indian Literature, the flagship journal of Sahitya Akademi.
