Subinoy Roy Biography 
Subinoy Roy was a very popular singer from West Bengal best known for his contributions towards Rabindrasangeet. He lived during the period, 8 November 1921 - 9 January 2004. He has also authored a few books related to Bengali music and Rabindrasangeet. In one of his works, he delved into the intrinsic elements of music which a learner should grasp, and also the use of Tanpura as a musical instrument for learners. Roy died just four days after the death of his wife in 2004. Roy was a renowned teacher also. A music school has been named after him, and run by his son.
Subinoy Roy was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on 8 November 1921. Roy was born in a Brahmin family with a musical bent. Naturally he was introduced to the world of Rabindrasangeet at a very young age. His mother taught him the basics of this form of music, originally composed by great Rabindranath Tagore. His higher education was done at Shantiniketan, where he took graduation in Chemistry. During his stay at Shantiniketan he got opportunity to continue his learning under Sangit Bhaban Acharyas like Shailajaranjan Majumder. He also learnt Hindustani music then. He then moved to England to study library science. Once he returned to India, he started his career as a librarian in Indian Statistical Institute. By that time he started teaching Rabindra Sangeet to students.
He sang for All India Radio for the first time in 1943, and since then he performed Rabindra sangeet regularly for AIR. His first gramophone record was released on 1949, with two songs. After that he recorded many songs. From 1970s onwards he started becoming more visible as an artist. He never had the popularity of some of his contemporaries, yet created a niche of his own through his rendition.
