Subhasini Mistry Biography

Subhasini Mistry is a social worker from West Bengal who was awarded India's fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2018. Became a widow with four children at the age of 23, she struggled in life working as a house maid, selling vegetables and a manual labourer. Yet she accumulated money, to build a charitable hospital called ‘Humanity Hospital for the poor. She lost her husband at a younger age due to lack of proper medical care, and her dream to build a hospital for poor was solely aimed to serve lower sectors of the society. She couldn’t afford proper medical treatment for her husband. She fulfilled her dream at the age of 70, selling vegetables and doing odd jobs.

 

She hails from Hanskhali village of, Nadia district, West Bengal at the time of infamous Bengal famine. Got married at a young age of 12, she lost her husband at a very young of 23. By that time, she had 4 children, and she struggled a lot to bring up four children. She also didn’t have proper education. Her husband was denied admission at a government hospital as she couldn’t afford the expenses. Later she determined that no patient should be denied treatment and left to die solely due to lack of money. She worked as a labourer, vegetable seller and house maid for more than 20 years. She also made her younger son a doctor. Unfortunately she sent two of her kids to an orphanage while afforded the studies of two kids.

 

In 1993, the Humanity Trust was formed and a temporary clinic was set up in the land she bought from landlord at cheap cost. She also received help from villagers who joined hands to fulfill her dream. Subhasini constructed a concrete building and gifted the hospital to the poor and made it operational in 1996 under the banner of ‘Humanity Hospital’, which purely runs on charity. It was inaugurated By Governor of Bengal, which gave limelight to Mistry and her efforts, which she truly deserved.

 

Currently she owns two hospitals which are serving the people of Bengal. One is located at her village in Hanskhali, Nadia district, and another at Sundarbans. Her younger son Ajoy is a doctor at the hospital which has 12 doctors and over 25 beds and runs on donations. She also expect some monetary help from government to meet with the salary of hospital staff.
